April 17, 2018

May 16, 17, 18, 19 NOVAT invites you to see the premiere shows of Sergey Prokofiev’s “Cinderella”.

Main parts of the 16th May show at NOVAT will be performed by the Mikhailovsky ballet principal dancer Viktor Lebedev and the Mikhailovsky ballet soloist Anastasiya Soboleva. The young dancers are not only the most beautiful ballet couple of the Russian scene, but also one of the best Prince and Cinderella performers of Prokofiev’s ballet. Another great duet of the Mikhailovsky theatre will embellish the premiere show on May 18th – principal dancer Angelina Vorontsova and a soloist Ernest Latypov; 19th May Prince part will be presented by the brilliant Ivan Vasiliev. Admirers of the Novosibirsk ballet company will rejoice at young prominent NOVAT soloist performing Prince and Cinderella parts on May 17th.

Prokofiev’s “Cinderella” is called “Victorious Ballet” for a reason – it was the first post-war production in 1945. It is deeply symbolic that the “Victorious Ballet” is going to premiere in first days of May in a theatre, which was inaugurated 12th May 1945 and which is a symbol of victory itself.

Prokofiev’s ballet was first time staged by the ballet master Rostislav Zakharov in 1945 at the Bolshoi theatre. Chief ballet master of the Mikhailovsky theatre Mikhail Messerer recreated the legendary Zakharov’s choreography: “The whole world nowadays seem to starve for ballets with classical vocabulary, complex point shoe technique and brilliant male parts. Rostislav Zakharov’s “Cinderella” is the perfect example for that virtuoso choreography. It includes the noble simplicity of forms, prescribed by the classic school. This is our heritage, which I’d like to keep safe and I am grateful to be able to recreate the Master’s work”.

Prokofiev designed his “Cinderella” in classic ballet terms. The concept appeared with the composer back in 1940, but the war interfered with the embodiment of his idea and Prokofiev returned to the score only in 1943. Composed during the severe war time, music of “Cinderella” reflects the entire dramatic tone of that age, as well as the faith in Victory and hope for peaceful and merry future.

Mikhail Messerer remarks: “It is a grand piece, “Cinderella” ballet. Following the classical traditions, Prokofiev managed to create a brand new work, an eternally deep music, which provides own content for each separate perceiver”.

Prokofiev’s “Cinderella” ballet is set to premiere on May 16, 17, 18, 19.
