Reading the opera

January 09, 2018

17th January we invite you to take part in a meeting of a new fashion – “Literary Wednesday” held as a part of an educational project “Open NOVAT”.

“Reading the opera” is a new educational project of the theatre. We will talk about NOVAT’s productions, based on Pushkin’s work: “The Queen of Spades. The Game” by Tchaikovsky and the upcoming opera premiere “Mozart and Salieri” by Rimsky-Korsakov.

The meeting will be featured with a literary scholar, doctor of philology, professor of the Russian literature and theory of literature at NSTTU Valery Maroshi and the Chief Stage Director of the theatre, Ph. D. in History of Arts Vyacheslav Starodubtsev.

We invite the audience to discuss what changes happened to Pushkin’s stories after being processed by librettists and composers, what part is ordained to Pushkin’s discourse according to the creators of Russian opera masterpieces and what are the prime principles of approaching a literary source used by Vyacheslav Starodubtsev, author of art concepts for the discussed performances. You will get to know why Vyacheslav Starodubtsev considers Tchaikovsky’s Herman more of a Dostoevsky type of character and why he called his production “The Queen of Spades. The Game”.

Besides that, Vyacheslav Starodubtsev will present to the audience his next production, also based of Pushkin’s literary works. In this new production “Mozart and Salieri”, set to premiere on January 27th and 28th, the director decided to go beyond operatic genre offering an audience a fusion of vocal, choreography, drama and a visual backdrop.
