Everything That is Called Art

January 03, 2016

January 2nd, 2016, will be the 85th birthday of People’s Artist of Russia Alexei Levitsky (1931-2008).

The entire work of this outstanding bass singer has always been associated with the Novosibirsk Opera and Ballet Theatre. After graduating from Kiev Conservatoire (class of People’s Artist of the USSR Ivan Patorzhinsky) Alexei Levitsky has worked as a leading soloist of the Novosibirsk State Opera and Ballet Theatre for 47 years.

He has performed more than 60 roles — Ivan Susanin, Boris Godunov, Pimen, Dositheus, Konchak, King Philippe, Leporello, Don Basilio and many others. Bright and ageless singing and acting talent of the singer was subject of admiration for several generations of spectators. The great Russian tenor Ivan Kozlovsky when visiting tour performances of Novosibirsk theatre in Moscow in 1960 once wrote: “I heard Alexei Levitsky’s singing twice. His voice is really fluent. His acting is very natural. He never intends to stun the spectators. He has real sincerity, deep understanding of the role — everything that is called Art”.
