Pushkin’s day at the Novosibirsk opera

June 06, 2017

On the 6th of June, the Pushkin’s day, NOVAT would like to present the performance “The Queen of Spades. The Game.” Traditionally, the Novosibirsk Opera and Ballet theatre stages a performance, based on works of the greatest Russian poet.

There are more than 20 operas and more than 10 ballets based on his works, and all of them, in different periods were presented in the Novosibirsk theatre repertoire. The operas “Eugene Onegin” and “Queen of Spades” by Tchaikovsky, Mussorgsky’s “Boris Godunov”, Glinka’s “Ruslan and Lyudmila”, Rimsky-Korsakov’s “Tale of Tsar Saltan”, “Russalka” (Mermaid) by Dargomyzhsky, Rackmaninov’s “Aleko”, Stravinsky’s “Mavra”; the ballets “The Bronze Horseman” by Gliere, “The Fountain of Bakhchisarai” by Asafieve – and that’s not the full list of the theatre’s performances built on Pushkin’s worlds.

The Pushkin times at the theatre started in the first year of its work. The second premiere based on Pushkin’s works at the theatre, opened on 12 May 1945, was Tchaikovsky’s “Eugene Onegin”. This performance has returned to the stage five times, and the overall amount of Pushkin-based performances comprises 390 shows.

“The Queen of Spades. The Game”, the most mystic performance of the music theatre world, will be staged for the seventh time at the Novosibirsk Opera and Ballet theatre on the Pushkin’s day. For the present day, it’s 350 different versions of “The Queen of Spades” that has been staged at the Novosibirsk theatre. The upcoming performance is based on Tchaikovsky’s score and directed by Vyacheslav Starodubtsev. As we know, the original Pushkin’s story is quite different from Tchaikovsky’s libretto; even the name of the main character is changed – Hermann is the surname of the protagonist in Pushkin’s world, and in the libretto Herman is the name of the character. The destiny of the characters is not so tragic in Pushkin’s works, unlike the opera – Lisa gets married and Herman, though goes mad, doesn’t die; even some characters of the libretto are not presented in the original story. The general story telling of two masterminds is quite different: Pushkin’s story is not as psychologically intense as the tragic, high-pitched mystic opera of Tchaikovsky.

Dedicated to the anniversary of Alexander Sergeevich Pushkin “The queen of Spades. The Game” performance will be shown 6th of June and recorded by the OTS TV-channel. The opera will be aired on 9th June at 21:00 on the OTS TV-channel.
