New Peer Gynt - Maksim Grishenkov

March 03, 2018

We present you the new Peer Gynt: 6th March the title role in “Peer Gynt” ballet will be performed by Maksim Grishenkov. A modern, highly emotional ballet with music by Edward Grieg with choreography by Edward Clug was warmly received by the Novosibirsk audience, and the Novosibirsk theatre award “Paradise” called this ballet the best performance of the season 2016-2017 in music theatre genre.

Edward Clug, master of contemporary choreography designed his ballet as a combination of dance and drama, following the plot of Henrik Ibsen’s play almost word by word – main character lives the entire life, full of temptations, losses and adventures.

Maksim Grishenkov, the leading ballet soloist shows a significant acting skill in each character he plays, the part of Peer Gynt is going to be one of his most interesting works: “It’s always interesting to fit a new image. Usually I play characters malicious, cunning or joyful beyond measure, and this type of exaggerated roles come easy to me. Peer Gynt is more like a real person, and as a man living for himself he is nothing like me. I would highlight certain trait of his image: my Peer Gynt is capable of deep, true love, but cannot stand everyday routine, so he runs away from home searching, risking, living on the edge. He is adventurous, interested in life itself. ”

Edward Clug’s ballet involves completely new school choreography, but as the director says it won’t be difficult to master for those who have classic ballet education. Main thing about this ballet for a dancer is an intelligible, clear rendition of your character.

Maksim Grishenkov explained why dancers are interested in working with Clug’s ballet: “Classic ballet requires wide gestures, solid poses – everything is determined by rigid canons. Motions in “Peer Gynt” are utterly natural, we move almost like in real life. And our artists loved this true-to-life concept, this honesty on the stage. You don’t have to pretend here, you need to show a real living human. That’s why our guys really love this ballet”.
