NOVAT’s 73rd season started with Chief Stage Director Vyacheslav Starodubtsev’s premiere “L’elisir d’amore”. Created in one breath, this opera by an ingenious Italian composer Gaetano Donizetti has been inspiring and fascinating people around the world for more than 180 years.
Vyacheslav Starodubtsev believes that “experienced theatre-goers won’t waste a chance to admire “L’elisir d’amore” with its merry tunes, light sentimental plot and sparkling humour; at the same time, the production team has done its best to make the performance interesting for the younger audience also, for those who like to be in the center of cultural life and who will fall in love with this lively music, this great art with the help of visual and notional accents made comprehensible and relevant special for them”.
Musical Director and Principal Conductor of the theatre Dmitri Jurowski mentioned the shower of musical hits in this opera, pointing that “every bar holds a musical act affecting the dramatic aspect of the performance; we all have put a lot of effort to make the opera sound just like the Italian theatre. Our main goal was probably to make “L’elisir d’amore” sound light and jolly but it takes a lot of effort, hours of meticulous rehearsals to keep the audience unaware of how hard this music is to perform”.
