The NOVAT’s chief stage director Vyacheslav Starodubtsev and the stage designer Sergey Skornetsky have presented the project of a new performance, “Love Potion” (“L’elisir d’amore”) based on Gaetano Donizetti’s opera, which is to open the new 73rd season on 7th September. This performance will become the first full scale comic opera, presented on the main stage of the Novosibirsk Opera and Ballet theatre.
“This time we’d like to present the performance as an opera taste-off – mentioned the stage director Vyacheslav Starodubtsev. – Since the brilliant, cheerful belcanto of Donizetti’s opera is so jollifying and rejoicing like the splashes of expensive champagne”.
The director saw some up-to-date problems in a simple story of a straightforward Nemorino who’s ready to believe in magic powers of an ordinary wine.
“In modern world, in a society of total consumption any goods can be sold as a magic tool due to publicity” – noted the director, decided to change the setting from a peaceful village to Italian – American pin up styled motel in suburbs”.
“Besides that, we came up with directing and setting solution in a musical style – told Sergey Skornetsky, who’s responsible for scenery and lighting of the “Love Potion”. – Anyway, we’re trying to build up an opera in terms of vivid, spectacular musical”.
